Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced on Sunday the arrest of 12 individuals accused of working as operatives for Israel, allegedly plotting activities aimed at undermining Iran’s security.
“As the Zionist regime (Israel) and their Western backers, most notably the United States, have not succeeded in their sinister goals against the people of Gaza and Lebanon, they are now seeking to spread the crisis to Iran with a series of actions planned against our country’s security,” the statement said.
Tensions across the Middle East have escalated, particularly after an incident in which thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies, reportedly used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah members, exploded in an attack widely attributed to Israel.

This has led to some of the most intense cross-border exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel, adding to the ongoing conflict that has run parallel to the nearly year-long war in Gaza.
The Revolutionary Guards detailed that the network of 12 operatives was apprehended across six different provinces within Iran, though they did not specify the exact timeline of the arrests.
In a separate event in late July, Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, was assassinated in Tehran, an act Iranian authorities have blamed on Israel.
However, Israel has not acknowledged any involvement in the assassination.
