This change comes on the heels of the Federal Government’s earlier announcement canceling the traditional military parade, which has typically been a key feature of Democracy Day celebrations.
According to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day, Tinubu’s address to the National Assembly will focus on the state of the nation, reflections on Nigeria’s democratic progress, and renewed calls for unity and institutional reform.
Later in the day, a public lecture is scheduled to hold at 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja as part of the commemorative activities.
Meanwhile, PDP chieftain and former presidential aspirant, Chief Dele Momodu, has criticized the current leadership, accusing political elites of deepening hardship and failing the ideals of democracy.
In an interview with Channels Television, Momodu said those who fought and died for democracy—particularly during the June 12 struggle—would be disheartened by the present state of the nation.
He described the current system as one dominated by “civilian dictators,” adding that politicians across all arms of government share responsibility for what he called the erosion of democratic values in Nigeria.
