The Chairman of the Council and Pro-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has passed away at the age of 64.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the renowned history professor reportedly died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at a hospital following a brief illness, days after undergoing a successful surgery.

In a statement released on behalf of the family by Olawale Oyeweso, it was confirmed that the scholar, educator, and mentor had passed away peacefully.

The statement reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at the age of 64 after a brief illness.
“Professor Oyeweso was a distinguished historian, educator, and mentor who positively impacted the lives of countless students, colleagues, and political associates. He will be deeply missed.”
Professor Oyeweso is survived by his wife, children, and extended family. His funeral and burial will take place today at 4:00 pm in his hometown of Ede following Solat Ashri.
