The court heard that he force-fed the infant a locally made insecticide known as fiya-fiya, which led to the baby’s death.
Evidence before the court showed that Sabo committed the act after his girlfriend, the child’s mother, declined his demand that the baby be killed to avoid the shame of having a child outside wedlock.
The prosecution further established that Sabo assaulted the girlfriend’s father, striking him on the head with a brick after the man caught him in the act of poisoning the baby.

During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Safiya Yalwati Yahaya, called three witnesses to testify, while the defendant also testified in his own defence.
In her judgment, Justice Aisha Yau held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. She consequently found Sabo guilty of infanticide and sentenced him to death by hanging.
The court also sentenced him to an additional three years’ imprisonment for causing grievous harm.
