The State Chairmen dismissed these speculations as the crafty work of detractors during a solidarity visit to the LP National Chairman, Julious Abure, at the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ceekay Igara, Chairman of the Council of State Chairmen of the party, spoke on behalf of his colleagues, emphasizing their contentment with the day-to-day management of party affairs by the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC).
Igara stated, “We want to use this opportunity to debunk the allegation that the Labour Party is planning to suspend our National Leader, Peter Obi. Our party is under the worst siege ever, including unleashing fierce propaganda against the party. The party has not at any time contemplated the suspension of our leader. He remains our leader and will continue to lead the party in our avowed determination to pull this nation out from the strangulation under this present government.”
Expressing dissatisfaction with ongoing media trials against the party and its leaders, Igara urged media friends to halt the propaganda, assuring that these orchestrated attacks would soon fizzle out.
Addressing concerns about the party’s fortunes in the Edo state governorship election, Igara reassured that the plots of those seeking discord within the party would fail, and the party would march on to massive victory.
The State Chairmen used the occasion to reaffirm their confidence in Barrister Abure’s leadership of the Labour Party and his ability to provide good and transparent leadership.
They responded to spurious allegations regarding the mismanagement of party funds and lack of transparency, emphasizing the high level of transparency displayed by the current leadership in managing party finances.
On the alleged misappropriation of N3.5 billion in party funds, Igara clarified, “Let me emphatically state here that our money is not missing. We didn’t generate N3.5b as claimed by the now suspended National Treasurer.”
He confirmed that the party only realized N1.3 million during the 2023 general election and another Seven Hundred Million naira donation, which was used by the Presidential Campaign Council.
Concerning the suspended National Treasurer’s allegations, Igara declared them as “huge lies” and clarified the role of the National Chairman in allowing her to perform her duties.
He suggested that the National Treasurer might have been influenced to lie against the National Chairman.
Regarding Peter Obi’s silence on the matter, Igara explained that the party leader had mediated privately on the issue, acknowledging the sustained attacks against Barrister Abure as sponsored and politically motivated.
Igara stressed that the allegations were unfounded and spurious.
The council of chairmen criticized a group they described as “urchins,” claiming to be party officials at the state level, and stated that these individuals were not authentic party members.
In conclusion, the council expressed satisfaction with the way the party is run and passed a vote of confidence on Barrister Julius Abure and his executive.
