The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected claims by former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, that the defection of governors to the party will not influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the party, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Oladejo Seye, said Aregbesola’s remarks were an attempt to overstate the opposition’s performance in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election.

The APC said it was necessary to set the record straight, noting that the former minister’s comments ignored key facts and drew misleading conclusions about electoral outcomes.
According to the party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election was the result of a broad national coalition and constitutional spread, not the outcome of votes from any single state.

The APC stressed that presidential elections are determined at the national level and cannot be reduced to developments in one state, regardless of its symbolic importance.
The party also dismissed claims of an opposition “victory” in Lagos, describing the outcome of the presidential poll in the state as temporary and inconsequential to the overall national result.
It noted that Lagos voters returned the APC to power shortly after, during the governorship election, reaffirming the party’s dominance in the state.

The statement further highlighted that subsequent bye-elections across Lagos produced landslide victories for the APC, which it said reflected the party’s strong grassroots presence, organisational structure, and continued acceptance among residents.
Addressing concerns about the credibility of the 2023 polls, the Lagos APC argued that the presidential election outcome in Lagos actually strengthened President Tinubu’s democratic credentials.
According to the party, the ability of an opposition candidate to win in a state controlled by the ruling party demonstrated Tinubu’s commitment to a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
