Lagos Begins Demolition Of Illegal Structures On Drainage Channel
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has started demolishing illegal structures built on the System 157 drainage channel from Orchid Road to Ikota in Eti Osa, according to a Facebook post by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Honorable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources.

The post stated that the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Ministry of Environment commenced removal of contravening structures on Monday following expiration of served notices and meetings with property owners.
The demolition aims to clear the waterway and allow free flow of stormwater, the Commissioner explained.
“Following the expiration of served mandatory notices and holding of several stakeholders’ meetings with owners of illegal properties built on System 157 drainage channel (Orchid Road – Ikota – Eti Osa), operatives from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources earlier today commence the removal of contravening structures to allow free flow of rainwater,” the post read.

The Lagos government has undertaken extensive drainage clearing efforts to mitigate flooding during the rainy season. Commissioner Wahab said the demolition of unauthorized developments near waterways is crucial to prevent loss of lives and property.
