Five suspects including the driver Nelson Peretei have been arrested in connection with the discovery.
In a statement the FCID spokesperson Aminat Mayegun disclosed that investigators traced the container to a United States based sender identified as Maria Adeyemi who allegedly failed to declare the ammunition and other prohibited items in the bill of lading. Another individual Sunny Nwadiri who claimed to be a retired United States Marine Colonel reportedly attempted to take responsibility for the ammunition but could not present any credible documentation.
According to the department preliminary findings show that the ammunition and contraband were deliberately concealed to bypass port security checks. Further investigations are ongoing with the FCID working closely with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Department of State Services to determine the source destination and possible criminal networks linked to the shipment.
