- 353 Rescued as LASTMA Raises Alarm Over Rainy Season Road Risks in Lagos
- Stressed that many of the incidents could have been avoided through responsible driving
- Commended LASTMA’s rescue personnel and other emergency responders
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it rescued 353 victims involved in road traffic accidents and emergency situations across Lagos State between January and May 2026.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this while reviewing the performance of the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Unit. The information was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the breakdown, the rescued persons included 207 adult males, 137 adult females and nine male children.
Bakare-Oki said the figures reflect the growing risks faced by road users, especially during adverse weather conditions, and urged motorists to exercise greater caution as rainfall intensifies across the state.
He noted that the rainy season comes with several hazards, including poor visibility, slippery roads, reduced tyre grip, flooding and increased chances of mechanical failure, all of which raise the likelihood of accidents.
While expressing satisfaction over the rescue of 353 individuals within the first five months of the year, he stressed that many of the incidents could have been avoided through responsible driving and adherence to traffic rules.
“A considerable number of these crashes could have been prevented through responsible driving habits, strict adherence to speed regulations, maintenance of safe driving distances, avoidance of reckless overtaking and routine vehicle maintenance,” he said.
The LASTMA boss advised motorists to ensure that key vehicle components such as brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights, indicators and steering systems are in good condition before setting out, especially during heavy rainfall.

He also warned against speeding on wet roads, explaining that rainfall reduces tyre grip and increases stopping distance, which can lead to skidding and collisions.
Bakare-Oki further cautioned drivers against attempting to drive through flooded roads without properly assessing water levels and road conditions.
He commended LASTMA’s rescue personnel and other emergency responders for their swift intervention and professionalism, noting that their efforts, alongside those of sister agencies, have helped save lives.
He urged all road users to prioritise safety, stressing that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains key to preventing avoidable accidents and loss of lives.
