As the 2025 rainy season approaches, the Lagos State Government has initiated a sanitation advocacy campaign across markets and streets to promote environmental sustainability and prevent flooding.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led an inspection tour of various locations, including Oyingbo Market, where he issued a 48-hour ultimatum to traders illegally occupying medians and walkways along newly constructed drainage channels.

He urged them to relocate to designated market stalls to avoid enforcement action.
“Oyingbo is home to the Red Line train interchange and other critical infrastructure. Unfortunately, road networks, water passages, and walkways have been turned into market spaces,” Wahab stated.
He emphasized that blocking drainage channels contributes to flooding, adding, “Traders engaging in illegal activities were given 24-hour notices yesterday. I am here today to make a final appeal through one-on-one advocacy before enforcement begins.”
The advocacy team also visited the Eko Hotels/Zenith Roundabout area, where road setbacks had been converted into trading spaces. Wahab urged traders to vacate these areas, warning that illegal trading in open spaces would no longer be tolerated.
At the Idumota/Ebute Ero Police Post Overhead Bridge, attachment stalls were removed to enforce compliance. Wahab reiterated the dangers of erecting structures under bridges, citing safety and environmental hazards.
He assured residents that while traders must earn a living, commerce should not compromise public safety and environmental sustainability.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to reopen blocked drainage channels at Outer Marina (CFAO/Elegbata area) to mitigate severe flooding.
“This advocacy is not just about enforcement; it’s about educating the public. Everyone must prepare for the rains and practice proper waste disposal,” Wahab said. He encouraged Lagosians to reduce the use of styrofoam containers and avoid dumping waste into drainage systems.
The sanitation campaign will extend to other major markets, including Yaba and Ojo, reinforcing the government’s commitment to flood prevention and sustainable urban management.

With a proactive approach to advocacy and enforcement, Lagos State is taking critical steps to safeguard residents from environmental hazards as the rainy season draws near.
