The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, joined dignitaries, cultural troupes and visitors from across the world at the 2026 World Sango Festival held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the historic Aafin Oyo in Oyo State.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the festival celebrates Sango, the revered Yoruba deity associated with thunder and lightning, and remains one of the significant expressions of Yoruba spirituality, history and cultural identity, particularly among the people of Oyo.
The 2026 edition featured a vibrant display of Yoruba traditions, music, dance and spiritual heritage, with guests treated to colourful royal processions, Bata and Dundun drumming, masquerade performances and ancestral storytelling.
Speaking at the event, the Director/CEO of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Olulowo Idowu Johnson, noted that the festival represents the enduring legacy of Sango as a symbol of strength, justice and cultural pride.
He added that beyond its spiritual significance, the festival promotes unity, tourism and global appreciation of African heritage.
As part of the celebration, the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture Troupe delivered a special performance, showcasing the richness and vibrancy of Lagos’ cultural heritage.
The performance further highlighted the historical and cultural bond between Lagos and Oyo while presenting the diversity of Yoruba traditions to an international audience.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to preserving, promoting and projecting Yoruba culture locally and globally through strategic partnerships and cultural exchanges.
The 2026 World Sango Festival at Aafin Oyo further reinforced the city’s significance as a major centre of Sango worship and a destination for cultural tourism in Nigeria.
