- Senator Mukhail Abiru facilitated the commissioning of a 505kW Interconnected Mini-Grid in Epe and flagged off its 5MW expansion.
- The project is expected to improve electricity supply, boost businesses, create jobs, and drive economic growth across Epe Division.
- Senator Abiru attributed the success of the initiative to years of advocacy, strategic partnerships, and the Federal Government’s ongoing power sector reforms.
A major milestone in Epe’s quest for improved electricity supply was recorded with the commissioning of a 505-kilowatt Interconnected Mini-Grid and the groundbreaking ceremony for its 5-megawatt expansion project, facilitated by the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the project, delivered through a partnership involving the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the European Union, the German Government through GIZ, and facilitated by Senator Abiru, is expected to provide reliable electricity, stimulate economic activities, and improve the quality of life for residents of Epe and surrounding communities.
Represented at the event by former Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulateef Rotimi Abiru, the senator described the project as the outcome of more than four years of sustained advocacy and strategic collaboration aimed at ensuring Epe benefited from the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS).
According to him, the project goes beyond improving electricity supply, as it is expected to boost local businesses, create jobs, strengthen small and medium-scale enterprises, and enhance productivity across key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and commerce.
Senator Abiru explained that while the newly commissioned 505kW mini-grid represents the first phase of the intervention, the 5MW expansion project will significantly increase electricity generation capacity to meet the growing energy demands of Epe Division.
He commended the Rural Electrification Agency, the European Union, and GIZ for partnering to bring the initiative to Epe, describing the collaboration as a model for sustainable infrastructure development.
The lawmaker also praised the power sector reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda has created an enabling environment for investments in energy infrastructure and rural electrification across Nigeria.
He reaffirmed his commitment to facilitating more people-oriented projects that will improve the socio-economic well-being of residents across Lagos East Senatorial District while urging communities to safeguard public infrastructure and continue supporting developmental initiatives.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe; Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Dr. Abba Aliyu; representatives of the European Union, GIZ, the German Embassy, traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and community stakeholders.
