EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. According to the Ogun State Sector Command, the crash occurred as a result of fatigue and speeding, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Odunsin Afolabi, said the accident happened at about 11:27 am and involved a DAF CF 380 trailer with registration number SNA 287 XA. He explained that the crash was a lone accident.
“The response time was two minutes before the rescue team from the Ogunmakin Unit Command arrived at the scene. A total of 29 persons were involved in the crash. Twenty three sustained injuries, while six passengers lost their lives,” Afolabi said.
He added that the injured victims and the deceased were taken to Oreoluwa Hospital, GOFAMINT Camp, Ogunmakin, and Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention and further procedures.
The FRSC spokesperson also warned against the practice of mixed loading of cattle and passengers, stressing that it complicates rescue efforts and increases the risk of fatalities during accidents. He noted that separating humans from goods during transit becomes difficult in emergencies, often leading to avoidable loss of lives.
The corps further advised motorists, particularly operators of commercial and heavy duty vehicles, to ensure regular servicing and inspection of their vehicles. Drivers were urged to avoid fatigue, maintain safe speeds, stay in control at all times and strictly adhere to traffic and road safety regulations, especially on major expressways.
The FRSC said it would continue to intensify sensitisation and enforcement to reduce road traffic crashes across the country.
