Lagos State Water Corporation (LASWARCO) has officially signed an agreement with WaterAid to rehabilitate the long-defunct Akilo Micro Waterworks, a project that aims to provide potable water to communities in the Ifako-Ijaiye area.

Originally constructed in 2012 as one of Lagos’ 18 micro waterworks, the Akilo facility had ceased operations.

However, with the backing of WaterAid and support from Armani Beauty, efforts are now underway to restore the waterworks to full functionality.

During the event, LASWARCO’s Managing Director, Mukhtaar Tijani, emphasized the project’s significance, stating that it would serve over 100,000 households upon completion.

“We acknowledge the importance of this project. There have been baseline and household studies carried out around Akilo before we arrived at the contractor that will be implementing this waterworks project, which will benefit 100,000 residents,” Tijani said.

Tijani also confirmed that Rigmars Projects Limited, the contractor assigned to the rehabilitation work, will begin operations as soon as an initial payment is made. The project is expected to be completed within six months.

Evelyn Mere, the Country Director of WaterAid Nigeria, highlighted the project’s critical role in improving access to clean water.

She explained that the collaboration between WaterAid and LASWARCO was carefully planned, including technical assessments and procurement processes.

Mere stressed the necessity of clean water, noting that unsafe water, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene contribute to approximately 90% of deaths caused by diarrheal diseases.

“WaterAid is making a strategic shift to interventions that serve large groups of people. Hence, this contract signing and awards event is enabling us to achieve this strategic objective,” Mere added.

The Managing Director of Rigmars Projects Limited, Nwankwo Chimechefolam, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work on the project and assured all stakeholders that the work would be of high quality and delivered on schedule.
