Lagos State Commences Oregun Theatre Reconstruction Following #EndSARS Protest Damage

The Lagos State Government has officially initiated the reconstruction of the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, Ikeja, as part of its ongoing efforts to bolster the state’s creative and entertainment sector.

Following the destruction of the Oregun Theatre during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, the State Government developed a comprehensive redevelopment plan to transform the facility into a world-class cultural and artistic hub.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, emphasized the significance of the project and its role in promoting artistic expression and enhancing the cultural landscape of Lagos State.
“The government is committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a hub for talent development and entertainment in Lagos,” she stated.
She urged residents to take collective responsibility and maintain a sense of ownership in safeguarding the infrastructure that serves their community.
“When public assets meant to serve the people are destroyed, it is often due to a lack of awareness and responsibility. We must change this mindset and instil a sense of community pride and protection for our shared heritage,” she remarked.

Commissioner Toke Benson-Awoyinka affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture would collaborate closely with all relevant stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to ensure the project’s smooth execution.
She commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, which has played a crucial role in making the project a reality, as well as his continued investment in the creative industry.
Permanent Secretary of the Office of Works, Arc. Adebayo Odusanya, praised the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s broader vision for infrastructural and cultural development.
The Permanent Secretary, represented by Arc. Tunde Yakub, assured stakeholders that the Office of Works would provide the necessary technical guidance and supervision to ensure the highest standards throughout the reconstruction process.
Project consultant Mrs. Jaiyesimi emphasized the importance of stakeholder cooperation for a successful reconstruction.
She assured that Thespian Family Theatre would take expedited actions to complete the project within the tenure of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“The revamped theatre will not only restore a vital cultural landmark but also serve as a significant boost to Lagos’ creative economy,” she affirmed.
The ongoing reconstruction of the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, Lagos, is in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly in advancing the state’s tourism, entertainment, and creative economy sectors.
Once completed, the revamped Lagos Theatre will serve as a beacon of artistic excellence, providing a platform for creatives to thrive and further solidifying Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s cultural capital.

The event marking this development was attended by key stakeholders and government officials, including Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Wale Musa, who also supervises the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the CEO of Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Idowu Johnson.
