Lagos State Introduces Fines for Red Light and Speed Limit Violations

The Lagos State Government has launched new measures to improve road safety and traffic management across the state.
The initiative, which includes the deployment of advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) along four major routes, will monitor and enforce compliance with speed limits and traffic laws.

The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at a media briefing on Thursday in Alausa, Ikeja.
Osiyemi revealed that the state government is committed to enhancing safety on Lagos roads by addressing key traffic violations such as running red lights and overspeeding. The ITS will be used to enforce these rules with fines for violators, starting immediately.
According to Osiyemi, the newly introduced ITS sites will operate in two main categories: Checkpoint sites for speed detection and E-Police sites for monitoring traffic violations.
Two checkpoint sites have been established at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80 km/h, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a 60 km/h speed limit. These sites aim to reduce overspeeding, which is a leading cause of accidents in Lagos.
In addition, the E-Police sites at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road will detect various traffic infractions such as running red lights, illegal U-turns, non-compliance with lane discipline, and reverse driving on highways.
The high-definition cameras at these locations will ensure strict adherence to traffic rules even without the presence of physical officers.
Fines for violating the red light and speed limit laws will range from N20,000 for running a red light to N50,000 for overspeeding. However, Osiyemi emphasized that the initiative is not meant to generate revenue, but to encourage responsible driving and reduce accidents on Lagos roads.
Drivers who violate these laws will receive SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) department detailing the violation and the fine.
The ITS is also expected to improve traffic flow by reducing congestion and providing data that can help government agencies make better decisions on future traffic management initiatives.

Osiyemi urged all road users, including private motorists, commercial drivers, and transport unions, to comply with the traffic regulations to ensure safety and order on Lagos roads.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with the private sector, is a key part of Lagos’ efforts to become a smarter, safer, and more technologically advanced city.
