A biology teacher at Omole Senior Grammar School, Lagos State, Adeola Akinsulure, has been named among the top 50 teachers globally at the Global Teacher Prize 2026 organised by the Varkey Foundation.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to a statement made available on Saturday, Akinsulure emerged as one of the finalists from more than 5,000 nominations and applications submitted across 139 countries, highlighting the global reach and competitiveness of the award.
The Global Teacher Prize recognises outstanding educators who have made exceptional contributions to the teaching profession and to society through innovation, dedication, and impact.
The statement noted that Akinsulure was selected for her significant efforts in transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education, particularly within public secondary schools.
It added that her work includes mentoring young girls, promoting environmental sustainability, and empowering students in low resource learning environments through creativity, innovation, and access to global educational opportunities.
Stakeholders in the education sector were quoted as urging the Nigerian government, especially the Lagos State Government, to formally recognise and celebrate Akinsulure’s achievement, describing it as a milestone that places Nigeria on the global education map.
They noted that such recognition would further inspire teachers across the country and encourage greater investment in quality education.

Reacting to the recognition, Akinsulure expressed gratitude to her mentors, partners, colleagues, and students, acknowledging their support throughout her professional journey.
The Global Teacher Prize, also known as the GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize, is a Varkey Foundation initiative organised in partnership with UNESCO and is regarded as one of the most prestigious honours in the education sector worldwide.
