Tinubu cautioned that continued diversion or withholding of council funds could leave the Federal Government with no option but to enforce compliance through an Executive Order that would mandate direct allocation of funds from the Federation Account.

Recalling the July 11, 2024 judgment of the Supreme Court, the President stressed that the ruling clearly prohibits state governments from controlling funds meant for local councils, describing compliance as non-negotiable.
He reminded party leaders that respect for judicial decisions remains central to democratic governance, adding that persistent violations would attract federal intervention if necessary.
The apex court had unanimously ruled that local government allocations must be paid directly to councils, declaring the joint account system unconstitutional under the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
