Lagos State Government has called for increased private and public investment in skills training and hospitality development, saying the sector remains central to its strategy for job creation and tourism revenue expansion.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, made the call on Friday at the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of the Diageo Learning for Life (L4L) programme held in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He noted that the hospitality industry in Lagos is experiencing rapid growth and requires sustained investment in skills development to maximise its potential.
Sule, who was represented by the Director of the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, Mrs Oluwakemi Kalesanwo, said economic diversification would depend heavily on a workforce equipped for service-driven industries.
He stressed that practical skills training remains critical in empowering young people to become productive, self-reliant and economically active citizens.
According to him, programmes such as the Learning for Life initiative, delivered in partnership with Celebr-8 Lyfe and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), are essential in promoting employability, entrepreneurship and economic growth.
He also urged graduands to remain disciplined, hardworking and committed to continuous self-development, describing creativity and innovation as key to future success.
The Commissioner added that government would continue to support initiatives that promote vocational training, entrepreneurship and youth empowerment, noting that investing in human capital is vital for societal development.

Speaking at the event, General Manager of Diageo Nigeria, Diageo Nigeria, Adebayo Alli, said the programme reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism sector as a driver of economic diversification and employment generation.
He said over 300 young Nigerians were trained under the programme, exceeding the initial target of 250 participants, with more than 150 securing internship placements across the hospitality industry.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, commended the initiative for its positive impact on youth development and skills acquisition.
