The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has said its partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and affiliated unions is beginning to yield positive results in transforming the transportation system in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Eko Hot Blog reports that LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, stated this on Saturday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise breakfast programme.

She explained that yellow buses, popularly known as danfos, remain the main mode of transport for most Lagos residents and scrapping them may not be an option.
“It is not about discarding what exists. We work with the yellow buses because without engaging them, you cannot talk about regulation. They are the ones who transport the majority of people in Lagos,” Akinajo said.

She further explained that LAMATA’s Bus Industry Transition Programme was created to integrate transporters in the informal sector. “It is a vision to merge the formal and informal together. We understand what they want, and they understand what we want.
“Today, the unions are working with us in Lagos. They manage one of our BRT routes and have been successful at it because they have operated transportation in Lagos for many years.
“What Lagos continues to do is work with them, exposing them to what it means to run a regulated service. They are beginning to understand it, and we are already seeing some positive results,” she added.
