Eko Hot Blog reports that the programme, implemented in partnership with Mitimeth, was held from January 19 to 23, 2026, and focused on transforming water hyacinth—an invasive aquatic plant—into valuable, market-ready products.
The initiative was designed to promote innovation, environmental responsibility, and livelihood creation within riverine communities.
Participants were trained in the harvesting, processing, and recycling of water hyacinth, while additional sessions covered safety practices, entrepreneurship, cooperative development, and sustainable environmental management.
The hands-on approach ensured that beneficiaries acquired both technical and business-oriented skills for long-term sustainability.
Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, reaffirmed LASWA’s commitment to innovative solutions that enhance waterway safety, protect aquatic ecosystems, and empower riverine communities.
Represented by the Community Engagement Officer of LASWA, Adesanya Saheed, the Special Adviser stated that converting water hyacinth from an environmental nuisance into a source of income aligns with the Lagos State Government’s vision for sustainability, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.
“With over 450 women and youths already trained across Lagos State’s riverine communities, LASWA has reaffirmed its commitment to scaling up similar programmes across the state, strengthening environmental stewardship and fostering sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, Hon. Monsuru Akinloye, commended LASWA for bringing the impactful initiative to the community, noting its dual benefits of tackling water hyacinth infestation while equipping women and youths with valuable, income-generating skills.
The training was facilitated by Mitimeth, a social enterprise known for creative recycling and community development. Through engaging demonstrations and one-on-one mentorship, participants were guided to immediately apply their new skills.
At the end of the programme, trainees showcased a variety of beautifully crafted recycled products and expressed plans to form cooperatives and micro-enterprises to sustain their new livelihoods and contribute to environmental protection within the community.
