Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the player with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history after featuring in his country’s final Group J match against Jordan.
The 39 year old made his record breaking 28th World Cup appearance after coming off the bench during Argentina’s 3-1 victory on Sunday.

The latest appearance moves the Argentine superstar to the top of the all time World Cup appearance list, overtaking every player to have featured in the tournament since its inception.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Germany legend Lothar Matthäus are jointly second on the list with 25 World Cup appearances each.
Former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, the competition’s all time leading goalscorer, occupies fourth place with 24 appearances, while Italy legend Paolo Maldini completes the top five with 23 matches.
Messi’s latest achievement adds to an illustrious international career that has seen him win the FIFA World Cup, the Copa América and numerous individual honours. His goal against Jordan also highlighted his continued importance to Argentina as the defending champions continue their quest for another world title.
With Argentina safely through to the knockout stage, Messi is expected to add to his appearance record as the tournament progresses.
