MAN Criticizes Planned Electricity Tariff Increase

- MAN has consistently advocated for improved electricity supply, pointing out that the current average of 4,000 MW per day is insufficient for a population of over 200 million people.
- In a statement released in Lagos, MAN’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, highlighted the detrimental effect that the proposed tariff increase would have on the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has voiced its strong opposition to the proposed hike in electricity tariffs.
Eko Hot Blog reports that according to MAN, Nigeria requires a significant increase in electricity supply to meet the growing demands of businesses and households in the country, with an estimated 30,000 megawatts (MW) needed to make a substantial impact.

MAN has consistently advocated for improved electricity supply, pointing out that the current average of 4,000 MW per day is insufficient for a population of over 200 million people.
In a statement released in Lagos, MAN’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, highlighted the detrimental effect that the proposed tariff increase would have on the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.
Ajayi-Kadir argued that the 2013 privatization of the power sector, intended to enhance energy supply to industries and households, has not yielded the desired results due to the technical and financial limitations of the operators in the value chain.
While installed capacity is reportedly around 10,000 MW, this has not been fully utilized due to the limited capabilities of the generation and distribution companies (GenCos and DisCos) in delivering adequate electricity supply nationwide.
