An investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Public Protection team has led to a 14-year prison sentence for Laurence Rafter, 43, of Bittacy Hill, Barnet, who was convicted of a serious sex offence.

EKO HOT BLOG gathered that at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 28 February, the jury delivered a unanimous verdict—following his conviction on 18 October 2024 that he had removed a condom during sex without consent. Rafter had also pleaded guilty last year to harassment against the same victim.

The case centers on an incident on 15 July 2021, when a 32-year-old survivor was contacted by Rafter on a dating app. Posing as “Jay Lincoln,” he arranged to meet her at her home in Islington.

Despite her explicit request for him to use a condom, Rafter repeatedly refused and went on to rape her. As he left the property, he falsely claimed to be HIV positive.

The victim promptly reported the attack, prompting an immediate investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

Detectives from the Public Protection Serious Sexual Offences Team identified Rafter through a distinctive tattoo recorded on a previous arrest, which matched photos he had sent to the victim.

Investigators uncovered that Rafter had meticulously planned his crimes by creating an alias, fabricating a false address and bank statement, and using a disposable pre-paid mobile phone to avoid detection.

His fraudulent documentation even included a fake driving licence that portrayed him as a wealthy resident of a multimillion-pound London home, though in reality he worked as an HGV driver and lived in a flat.

The court also learned that Rafter had a history of predatory behaviour. In February 2022, he was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to malicious communications and threats to disclose a private image involving two separate victims. In those cases, he too had used an alias and engaged in abusive conduct through text messages.

Following his recent appearance, Rafter was ordered to serve 14 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley commended the survivor’s bravery and the strength of her evidence, adding that the sentence reflects the significant threat Rafter poses to women. Ridley stressed that the investigation was thorough and relentless, ultimately bringing a dangerous offender to justice.

The Metropolitan Police are now bolstering their specialist Public Protection teams and working closely with partners across London to target high-risk areas and dangerous perpetrators of violence against women and girls.
