According to state broadcaster CCTV, Mr. Liu transferred nearly 200,000 yuan ($28,000) after the scammers claimed his online partner needed money to start a business and help a sick relative.
To make the scam more convincing, the fraudsters produced a fake ID and medical documents. They also sent manipulated AI-generated photos and videos showing “Ms. Jiao” in various settings, including holding a paint palette and standing on city streets.

Authorities discovered that a coordinated scam team was behind the deception, using advanced AI tools to create lifelike interactions.
“Throughout the process, Mr. Liu never met Ms. Jiao in person,” CCTV stated.
