Police investigating the fatal shooting of healthcare executive Brian Thompson in New York City have expanded their search to Georgia, as they continue their pursuit of the fugitive gunman.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that officers have been deployed to Georgia and other stops along the bus route. Despite five days of intensive searching, police have yet to disclose the suspect’s identity or motive. CCTV footage shows the masked gunman at several locations, including a taxi ride uptown toward the Port Authority bus terminal.
Efforts to trace the escape route have focused on Central Park, where police believe the suspect entered on a bicycle after the shooting. A backpack found near the park’s lake contained a jacket and Monopoly banknotes but no weapon.
After exiting the park on the Upper West Side, the suspect is thought to have taken a taxi to the bus terminal. Authorities believe he escaped New York via a bus, the same mode of transport he used to enter the city 10 days earlier from Atlanta. During his stay, he checked into a hostel where he briefly removed his mask, providing police with their clearest image to date.

Investigators are exploring possible motives, including a targeted attack on the healthcare insurance system. Bullet casings recovered at the scene bore inscriptions such as “depose,” “deny,” and “delay,” echoing themes from a book criticizing insurance practices.
Thompson’s death has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with users sharing personal stories about being denied healthcare by insurers. Authorities continue to search for the suspect while appealing to the public for information.
