The prices of grains and other staple foods are gradually falling in markets across the state, compared to the high prices seen in 2024.
At Sheikh Abubakar Gumi Market, the main market in Kaduna, a 50kg bag of foreign rice that previously cost N125,000 to N130,000 now sells for N120,000 to N123,000.
Yams that sold for N7,000 per tuber or N28,000 for a set of five in 2024 now cost between N5,000 and N6,000 per tuber or N25,000 for five medium-sized ones on special deals.
A measure of eight cups of beans, which cost N3,000 to N3,500 before, now sells for N2,500.
Similarly, a measure of garri has reduced from N1,400–N1,500 to N1,200, while a carton of Indomie noodles that was N7,700 now goes for N7,500.
Some shoppers who spoke to pressmen said they are hopeful that food prices will keep dropping.
Hafsat Muhammad said she now buys a measure of rice at N2,100 instead of N2,400, while a measure of corn that used to cost N1,200 now sells for N900.

Food Prices
Hajiya Ummi Shuaibu, a businesswoman, said she bought bags of maize after the harvest to sell later at higher prices. However, since food prices have been falling, she decided to sell her stock to avoid losses.
“A bag of corn that used to sell for N60,000 is now around N50,000 to N55,000, so I must sell it quickly,” she explained.
