Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating infrastructure at Kings College Lagos (KC), the country’s premier secondary school.
EkoHotBlog reports that the Minister made this observation during an unannounced visit to the school on Thursday morning, catching the management, staff, and students unwares.

During his inspection, Dr. Alausa commended the school for the quality of meals provided to boarders, noting that students confirmed the food was both nutritious and tasty.
However, his assessment of the overall learning environment painted a troubling picture.
He lamented the unsanitary conditions within the school premises and was particularly displeased with the poor state of the laboratories, which he described as dark and unsuitable for effective learning.
A major concern raised during the visit was the school’s prolonged power outage. The school’s principal, Mr. Zachariah Mogaji, informed the Minister that Kings College had been without electricity for the past seven months due to its inability to pay the staggering monthly electricity bill of ₦12 million demanded by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko Disco).
As a temporary measure, the school had resorted to using a generator, which is only switched on at specific times to conserve fuel.
In response, Dr. Alausa assured the principal and students that he had immediately contacted the Chairman of Eko Disco and received assurances that power would be restored to the institution within a short period.
He further emphasized that the Federal Government (FG) would take proactive steps to address the school’s infrastructural challenges.
The Minister also took note of the UBEC building within the school premises, which he described as tattered and in a state of disrepair.
He pledged that the Federal Government would renovate the structure to create a more conducive learning environment for students.
On the issue of sanitation, the principal assured Dr. Alausa that the school management would take swift action to improve cleanliness.
He promised that the Minister would be “wowed” by the transformation when he visits next.
Additionally, Mr. Mogaji used the opportunity to appeal to the Ministry of Education to deploy more teachers to Kings College, emphasizing the urgent need for additional staff to maintain high academic standards.
He also expressed gratitude to the school’s Old Boys Association and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for their continuous support in managing the affairs of the institution.
