- Urges schools and parents to prioritise growth and character, not plaques
A Nigerian mother has sparked a conversation online after criticising a school for handing out an award for the “Tallest Female Student” during a recent prize-giving ceremony.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that in a video shared online, the visibly frustrated woman questioned the rationale behind such an award, describing it as senseless and harmful to students’ self-esteem.

“Does this award make sense?” she asked. “Rewarding the tallest student in a class? What happens to the short person, make the person go sleep abi?”
The woman further slammed the lack of educational standards in private schools, calling for regulators to investigate the increasingly questionable awards being handed out.
She expressed concern about how these kinds of awards could damage the confidence of students who don’t receive any form of recognition.
In her message to fellow parents, she condemned the growing trend of measuring a child’s worth solely through awards and academic trophies.
“At the graduation I attended, a woman was visibly angry with her child for not coming first. Why are some parents acting like their entire existence depends on their child coming home with an award?” she said.
She emphasised that while it’s important to celebrate high achievers, not every bright or responsible child will go home with a plaque, and that’s perfectly okay.
“Your child who shows up every day, learns, improves, stays curious and kind, that child is doing very well. Not every brilliant child will have a certificate to show for it,” she noted.
The mum urged parents to focus on personal growth, resilience, and character development, rather than clinging to titles or awards.

“Your worth as a parent is not measured by certificates. Stop reducing your child’s potential to a piece of cardboard. Focus on the child’s journey, not just the glory,” she added.
She concluded by reminding parents that life rarely hands out trophies for doing the right thing and that children should be celebrated beyond their ability to win awards.
The video has since gone viral, drawing praise from many social media users who commended her perspective on parenting and education.
