The fatal shot reportedly tore through his stomach, killing him instantly. The incident occurred while officers were dispersing tricycle riders who were protesting against the alleged killing of one of their colleagues over a N100 bribe.
After the shooting, the police placed Mubarak’s body in the mortuary for investigation. However, when his father, Olamilekan, attempted to collect the corpse for burial on January 16 by presenting the required police clearance, he was informed by morgue staff that the body was no longer there.
According to the attendants, the corpse had possibly been disposed of in a mass burial.
In an emotional interview with Punch correspondent, Olamilekan expressed his shock and anguish, saying, “I am still trying to come to terms with the shocking news that my son’s body has gone missing from the morgue.
For three years, I’ve been patiently waiting for the police to conclude their investigation into Mubarak’s death. Instead of getting updates or closure, I’ve been met with delay tactics and empty promises.
When I finally decided to bury my son at my own expense, I requested a letter from the police and took it to the morgue. I was then told that the body had been removed and likely buried in a mass grave.

This is a body that was supposed to be under police investigation. I am having trouble understanding how this could have happened without the police being aware of it. As a father, I’m still grieving the loss of my son. Mubarak was taken from me far too soon, and now it feels like his body has been taken away from me again.”

Olamilekan has called on both the police and hospital management to provide answers and deliver justice for his family and his son’s memory. Meanwhile, the family’s lawyer, Olalekan Matti, has sent a formal letter to the hospital’s Medical Director demanding details regarding the mass burial.
In the letter, which was obtained by PUNCH Metro, Matti requested information on the burial date, the location of the mass grave, and any other pertinent details information he expects to receive within seven days.
Despite this request, Mubarak’s father has stated that the hospital has not responded, and attempts to reach the Ministry of Health spokesperson, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, by phone and text have so far gone unanswered.
