Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London, United Kingdom, after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness. The news of his death has sparked a wave of national mourning and solemn tributes across political lines.
In a statement released on Monday, the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed that the decision was taken on the joint directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025,” the statement read.
The suspension is to allow lawmakers and officials to fully participate in the state burial activities scheduled for the former president. Members of both chambers have been asked to adjust their schedules accordingly.
The leadership of the Senate and House also extended their deepest condolences to the Nigerian people, especially Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, and his home state of Katsina. They described the late president as a man of integrity who remained committed to Nigeria’s unity throughout his years in service.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” the statement added.
