EKO HOT BLOG reports that checks revealed that electricity generation fell from 3.87 gigawatts (GW) at 5 pm to 3.56GW at 6 pm, eventually reaching 0.00GW by 7 pm and 8 pm.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement released later that evening. The EEDC noted a “general system collapse” at 6:48 pm, which resulted in a total loss of electricity supply across its entire network.
“Due to this development, all our interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations are out of supply. As a result, we are unable to provide electricity to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states,” the statement, signed by EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, explained.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a notice to its customers, stating: “Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today. This has affected power supply to our franchise areas.”
Both companies assured customers that efforts were underway to restore power as soon as possible, pending stabilization of the national grid.
This is the latest in a series of grid failures, raising ongoing concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
