Voting was scheduled to begin at midnight on Saturday, July 18, 2026, but the exercise did not commence after what the committee described as a deliberate attempt to compromise and disrupt the electoral process.
In a statement issued in the early hours of Saturday, the ECNBA apologised to candidates, eligible voters, agents, consultants and election observers for the unexpected delay.
According to the committee, the electronic voting infrastructure came under a “deliberate, coordinated and sustained cyberattack” shortly before voting was due to begin.
The ECNBA disclosed that its cybersecurity experts, working alongside the Election Voting Service Provider, immediately activated emergency response measures to contain the attack and protect the integrity of the voting platform.
The committee said technical teams were working to neutralise the threat, restore the system and ensure the election proceeds without compromising its credibility.
“The system is expected to be fully restored and voting will commence immediately upon restoration,” the committee stated.
However, it did not announce a new commencement time, explaining that voting would only begin after the platform had been fully secured and certified safe.
The electoral committee also clarified that voting had not started and that the platform was not accepting ballots at the time the statement was issued.
It assured members of the association that the portal would be reopened only after technical experts confirmed that it was fully operational and secure.
Eligible voters were advised to await further official communication before attempting to access the election portal.
ECNBA Warns Lawyers Against Fake Voting Links
The ECNBA also warned members of the association against using unofficial websites or responding to unauthorised messages claiming to provide access to the election platform.
According to the committee, the designated ECNBA voting portal remains the only approved platform for the election, warning that fake links and misleading communications could be part of the alleged cyberattack.
Lawyers were urged to rely solely on updates issued through the committee’s official communication channels.

Despite the disruption, the committee said candidates, their agents and independent election observers remained at the designated monitoring centre while efforts continued to restore the electronic voting system.
The ECNBA reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible and secure election, stressing that the platform would not be reopened until all identified security threats had been eliminated.
It also pledged to provide regular updates as recovery efforts progressed.
The statement was jointly signed by the Chairman of the ECNBA 2026, Aham Ejelam (SAN), and the committee’s Secretary, Ibrahim Nassarawa.
