The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 29-year-old graduate, Oguejiofor Nnaemeka Simonpeter, for allegedly smuggling heroin valued at over ₦3.192 billion into Nigeria.

According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on Sunday, Simonpeter, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli, Anambra State, recently returned from Thailand.

He was arrested by NDLEA operatives on October 7, 2024, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to bring the illicit drugs into the country. The heroin was hidden in six backpacks, which were placed in two large suitcases.

The statement explained that Simonpeter had left Thailand on October 3, traveling on a Qatar Airways flight, and had a two-day layover in Doha before arriving in Lagos. His luggage, however, had initially been routed to Accra, Ghana, his intended final destination.

After arriving in Lagos on October 5, Simonpeter requested the airline to reroute his luggage to Nigeria, hoping to retrieve the bags quickly and avoid detection. However, NDLEA officers apprehended him at the airport.
