- Rising floodwaters pose a significant danger to the lives, homes, and farmlands
- The local warning is part of a larger national flooding crisis
In response to severe flooding, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued an urgent and serious warning to people living in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State. The agency is telling them to evacuate right away because the fast-rising floodwaters are a big danger to their lives, homes, and farms.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the warning was issued after a joint flood assessment conducted by NEMA and the Federal Fire Service. The assessment followed growing concerns from residents about unusually high water levels across several communities in the oil-producing region.

The joint team, led by Assistant Chief Search and Rescue Officer, Mr. Nweze Innocent, visited the Abacheke community and observed visible signs of flooding, with water already beginning to submerge homes. NEMA has described the situation as “alarming” and revealed that desperate farmers have started harvesting their immature crops in an attempt to save them before the fields are completely underwater.
This local alert comes amid a broader national concern over flooding. According to a NEMA report, this year’s flooding has already resulted in 165 deaths, 82 people are missing, and has affected 119,791 individuals across 19 states. The agency also noted that children and women have been the most affected by the disaster.
