In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the reports as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”
“Nigerian citizens, wherever they are in the world, must not be treated as less than human, nor should their vulnerability be exploited under the guise of immigration procedures,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

The Commission also raised concerns over claims of corruption, alleging that middlemen and certain groups may be exploiting the victims through extortion and intimidation. NiDCOM said such practices, if verified, not only endanger lives but also undermine justice and due process.
Dabiri-Erewa reassured victims and their families that the allegations would not be ignored, adding that the Commission is already engaging with the Nigerian High Commission in India, Indian authorities, and international human rights bodies to verify the reports.
She stressed that urgent action must be taken to protect the victims, provide medical and psychological support, and bring perpetrators to justice.
NiDCOM called on the Government of India to immediately investigate the allegations, dismantle any networks of exploitation, and guarantee the safety and dignity of Nigerians within its borders.
“Our hearts go out to the young women and men enduring such traumatic experiences. We stand in solidarity with them and affirm that Nigeria will never abandon its citizens in their time of need,” the statement read.
The Commission pledged to pursue the matter until justice is served and the dignity of all Nigerians abroad is safeguarded.
