In a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos, Dr. Opeifa announced that the unions had agreed to shelve the strike after discussing their grievances with the management.
He described the maiden meeting with labor leaders as successful, with a mutual understanding of the concerns raised.
Some issues raised during the meeting, including concerns about medical personnel allowances, were swiftly resolved. Other matters were assigned for further discussion at the directorate level, with both parties showing a willingness to engage in continued dialogue.
“The unions have reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate with the management and provide all necessary support to ensure that train services operate at maximum efficiency,” Opeifa said. He added that this collaboration would not only help boost the growth of the rail sector but also contribute to reducing the prices of goods and services, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the sector.
Opeifa expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, emphasizing that with the backing of the workforce, the NRC could optimize operations and improve the overall quality of the railway system in Nigeria.
He also reassured the unions that the management remains committed to the welfare of the workers, ensuring that their working and living conditions would be adequately addressed under his leadership.
The unions, which had initially expressed their concerns over various issues, including worker welfare and management practices, had indicated a willingness to halt their agitations in light of Opeifa’s appointment.
The new managing director is recognized by the unions as someone who understands their struggles, having a human rights background.

Both union leaders expressed optimism that railway workers would benefit from a new and improved working environment under Opeifa’s leadership.
