The Lagos State House of Assembly has tightened security at its complex as lawmakers hold a plenary on Monday.
This follows speculations of a potential showdown after the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on Saturday insisted he remained the Speaker despite his removal on January 13, 2025. Obasa was ousted by the majority of lawmakers over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, with Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda assuming the role.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Monday’s plenary marks the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal. The former speaker has been absent from the House since his ousting.
Speaking on Saturday, Obasa, who has stayed outside Lagos since the saga, reaffirmed his claim as Speaker, urging lawmakers to follow due process for his removal. He denied allegations of corruption, describing the claims as baseless.
“My status in the House? I believe I am still the Speaker until the right thing is done. If you want to remove me, do it the proper way, and I won’t contest it,” Obasa stated.
He dismissed allegations of spending N16 billion on a gate and purchasing Hilux buses at N1 billion each. “These claims are impossible. I will debunk all allegations made against me by the House,” he said to a crowd of supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja.
Meanwhile, the Assembly’s acting Clerk issued a notice requiring staff and aides to present valid identification cards for entry into the complex.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of maintaining peace. Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale stated, “There won’t be any breakdown of law and order in Lagos State. Anyone congregating to foment trouble will be dispersed and, if unruly, arrested.”

The police also denied invading Obasa’s residence, countering his claims that over 200 officers had blocked his homes during his removal.
