The lecture at the community central mosque focused on the Islamic subject and pillar of Islam, “Zakat & Sadaqah.”

The lecture was delivered by a guest speaker and a revered Islamic scholar, Hon. Abdul-Lateef Abdul-Hakeem, popularly known as Hon Yepe.

The cleric took time to share religious insight, essence, and the reward of giving.
Hon. Abdul-Lateef encouraged Muslims to embrace the act of voluntarily giving to those in need from their abundance as he addressed Zakat and Sadaqah as a reward-filled act from Allah.

Continuing, he added that attempting good deeds such as sadaqah, stating that publicizing the act is wrong and may depreciate the reward involved.
According to him, sadaqah is a voluntary act every Muslim should embrace, while also identifying a common mistake of feeding the poor with just Akara; he declared it unreligious as a faithful Muslim, rather including a complimenting edible such as bread, pap, or Garri for a clear purpose of sadaqah amidst other meal choices.

The Islamic cleric further explained Zakat as a voluntary and annual act in Islam, urging all Muslims to indulge appropriately.
He simplified this form of kindness by sharing how this annual payment can be conveniently achieved, stating the percentage as one of forty from an individual’s annual income.

“A salary earner who receives one million may set aside twenty-five thousand, which is 2.5 of his income monthly, and a farmer who harvests grains may measure one thousand two hundred handfuls of the grains annually.” He explained.
Sheikh Abdul Lateef further highlighted the difference between Zakat, a compulsory charity, and Sadaqah, a voluntary act of kindness, stating both importance in enabling a kind society and reward from almighty Allah.

The Islamic scholar urged Muslims to embrace all acts of kindness, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.
