EKO HOT BLOG reports that the crisis erupted after operatives of the Intelligence Response Team from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) locked the Amotekun bases in Osogbo and Ife Central Local Government Areas. The move followed public outrage over the killing of two siblings in Akinlalu community, allegedly by Amotekun officers.
The Osun Amotekun spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, confirmed that several operatives were arrested in connection with the killings. However, police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said only five were detained, noting that the IGP had taken over the case after Amotekun Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, failed to honour an invitation for questioning.
In a statement, Ojelabi said Omoyele’s social media claim of being attacked by masked men was “a figment of his imagination aimed at derailing the course of justice.” The police added that evidence linked Amotekun members to the killings, with witnesses ready to identify those involved.
Reacting, Speaker of the Osun Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, condemned the police action, describing Amotekun as a “lawfully established security outfit” that cannot be sealed without legislative approval. He alleged that Senator Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, played a role in the arrests, accusing him of using federal forces to sabotage a state institution.
Fadahunsi admitted inviting the police, insisting Amotekun had become “a home of murderers, not protectors.” He said, “From February to date, I have lost 12 people to Amotekun killings. I will not allow them to destabilize my district.”
Meanwhile, the police team evacuated four suspects detained at the Osun Amotekun headquarters in Osogbo and transferred them to the appropriate divisional commands.
