Oyo Town Prepares for Final Traditional Rites of Alaafin-Elect

The historic town of Oyo is set to witness the final stage of traditional rites (Oro Ipebi) for the Alaafin-elect, Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, on the night of March 29, 2025, at the Sango Shrine in Koso, Eko Hot Blog reports.
A statement released by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin of Oyo, disclosed that the Alaafin-elect will be accompanied by distinguished members of the Oyo Mesi (traditional council), princes and princesses from all royal families, traditional priests, Baales (village heads), and residents from various walks of life.

As part of the sacred ritual, Alaafin Owoade will spend the night at the Sango Shrine, where Baba Mogba will place the Sango Crown on his head in the early hours of Saturday, officially declaring him the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
As the Sango Crown is placed upon the head of Oba Akeem Owoade 1 during the traditional rites at the Sango Shrine in Koso, all those present, including the distinguished members of the Oyo Mesi, will demonstrate their reverence by prostrating and chanting “Kabiyesi.”
This harmonious chorus of “Kabiyesi,” a Yoruba term for “Your Majesty,” signifies the collective honor and respect accorded to the new monarch, marking a symbolic transition of power and the beginning of a new era for the Oyo people.
This traditional rite serves as a prelude to the official coronation ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on April 5, 2025, at the open field of Oliveth Heights, Oyo.
