An elderly woman, identified as Mrs. Affiong Peters, has died after suffering a medical emergency while travelling in a commercial bus in Calabar, Cross River State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the incident occurred on Saturday night, with fellow passengers initially suspecting that she may have been experiencing stress or an underlying health condition before she became unresponsive.

Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Command described the death as unfortunate.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the command said preliminary investigations showed that the incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m.
According to the police, the driver of the commercial minibus, Mr. John Okon John, reported the incident at Atakpa Police Station, explaining that he was conveying eight passengers from Watt Roundabout towards the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam axis when one of the passengers requested to alight along Edgerly Road, off William George.

While making room for the passenger to disembark, Mrs. Peters also stepped out of the vehicle before suddenly sitting on the ground and becoming unresponsive.
She was reportedly unable to speak, prompting concerned passengers to quickly assist her back into the vehicle and rush her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for emergency treatment.
However, medical personnel later confirmed her dead.
The police said the deceased’s family has been identified and informed of the development and is making arrangements for the preservation of her remains.
