Zoning, reconciliation, and possible aspirants dominate talks ahead of 2027 elections.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering a consensus arrangement for electing new leaders at its November national convention in Ibadan.
Party insiders revealed that the move is aimed at avoiding divisions similar to the 2022 presidential primaries, which were blamed for the PDP’s poor performance in the 2023 elections and the defection of key figures, including two governors, to rival parties.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the reconciliation drive is also focused on the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
He has insisted that Chief Dan Orbih be recognized as South-South Zonal Chairman while Chief Ali Odefa be derecognized from the South-East.
Wike recently warned that failure to address these demands could trigger fresh crises, stressing, “If they want another round of crisis, so be it.”
PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and the Governors’ Forum Chairman, Bala Mohammed, confirmed that zoning the presidential ticket to the South forms part of ongoing restructuring.

The Douye Diri-led zoning committee earlier ceded the national chairmanship to the North, with consultations ongoing to micro-zone the presidency to either the Southeast, South-South, or Southwest.
Although no aspirant has declared interest, names like former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Labour Party candidate Peter Obi have been mentioned in political circles. Party leaders also say younger politicians are being considered for top offices. One figure gaining traction is Hon. Teejay Yusuf, a three-term lawmaker from Kogi State, described by stakeholders as a bridge-builder and loyalist.
Yusuf noted that consensus, not individual ambition, will guide the convention. “Stakeholders will decide collectively. It’s about rebuilding the party,” he said.
With the November convention drawing closer, intense negotiations and reconciliations are expected to determine PDP’s strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
