EKO HOT BLOG reports that speaking during a media parley in Zamfara on Wednesday, Governor Lawal stated that the discord within the party is not tied to any one figure. “Everybody has their own issue; it’s not just about Atiku Abubakar; it’s beyond him,” he said. “It’s an internal problem within the PDP, and we are making a conscious effort. I think it’s about people’s egos — everybody, no exception.”
When asked if he considered himself part of the problem, Lawal admitted, “Yes.”
The PDP has been grappling with a deepening crisis since its loss in the 2023 general elections, which has triggered a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Notable defections include Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and several commissioners.
In response to the defections and internal rifts, the PDP’s National Working Committee held an emergency meeting in Abuja to try to salvage the situation.
Governor Lawal also addressed Nigeria’s electoral integrity, expressing confidence in the possibility of free and fair elections. He cited his own election as proof. “Yes, there will still be a free and fair election. That was what made me elected as the governor of Zamfara State… So, it was a free and fair election, and I believe it will happen. It’s a matter of time,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has initiated coalition talks with key political figures such as Peter Obi and former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, aiming to form a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. He described the move as necessary to prevent Nigeria from becoming a “one-party state” under the APC.
However, the plan has not received universal support within the PDP. Prominent party elder Bode George has instead called for unity and internal reconciliation as the party prepares for its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Further complications emerged after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected the PDP’s NEC meeting notice over procedural irregularities. In a letter dated June 13, INEC stated that the notice lacked the required signatures of both the National Chairman and National Secretary. It was only signed by Acting Chairman Umar Damagum, omitting Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.

The NEC meeting, set for June 30, is expected to address the PDP’s leadership crisis and zoning issues. The G5 faction, led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is insisting that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket be zoned to the South.
