EKO HOT BLOG reports that the decision was taken during the party’s 106th National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday.
A communiqué issued after the meeting and read by the caretaker committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the party also approved a detailed timetable for primaries for other elective positions.
The timetable aligns with the election schedule released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the approved schedule, the submission of the party’s membership register to the electoral commission will take place on April 10, 2026.
Primaries for State Houses of Assembly will hold on May 2, 2026, while National Assembly primaries are scheduled for May 9, 2026.
Governorship primaries will follow on May 16, 2026, with the presidential primary fixed for May 23, 2026. The NEC explained that the timetable was structured to comply with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates the electoral commission to issue a notice of election at least 300 days before the polls.
The communiqué stated, “NEC received and noted the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections as issued by INEC pursuant to the provision of the Electoral Act 2026.”
The party urged its organs and stakeholders across the country to begin preparations and adhere strictly to the approved timeline.
The committee also reaffirmed plans to hold the party’s national convention on March 29 and 30, where a new National Working Committee will be elected in line with the party’s constitution. Members of the committee commended the caretaker committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed for stabilising the party during the transition period.
NEC also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of ward and local government congresses and noted that the state congresses scheduled for the weekend would follow the party’s established guidelines. The committee welcomed recent judgments of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria which affirmed the leadership of the caretaker committee.

According to NEC, the rulings have strengthened the constitutional processes and stability within the party. The committee further urged party leaders involved in internal disputes to pursue reconciliation and avoid further litigation, especially appeals to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
