Durkwa says Shettima played a key role in establishing NAUB and should intervene
Eko Hot Blog reports that Alhaji Idris Mamman Durkwa, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State, has urged Vice President Kashim Shettima to intervene and halt the proposed merger of the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) with the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.
Mamman Durkwa has backed the appeal made by Governor Babagana Zulum and others against the merger, stating that NAUB is already running smoothly with six faculties. He emphasized the educational disadvantage faced by the people of Borno and other states in the Northeast due to the over-decade-long Boko Haram crisis, saying, “Downgrading NAUB is like adding salt to the injury.”
“This directive for downgrading NAUB will have serious consequences on the lives and progress of the people in the region, as the federal government cannot compromise the cost of education,” Durkwa lamented.
The PDP chieftain stressed that merging NAUB with NDA is unjustifiable, alleging some mischief as no other federal university has been affected by the directive.
Durkwa recalled Shettima’s pivotal role in establishing NAUB when he was the governor and senator of Borno State. “The VP is the one who speedily granted the approval of the site and delivered the Certificate of Occupancy of the institution while he held sway as Governor. I have the belief that VP will use his good office and intervene in this matter as soon as possible,” Durkwa stated.
He expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima would listen to the pleas and maintain NAUB’s status quo to ensure the educational future of children in Borno, the Northeast region, and Nigeria as a whole.
