The Federal Government, on Tuesday, reaffirmed its commitment to restoring electricity across Northern Nigeria, where 17 states have faced power outages due to extensive vandalism of transmission lines.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced that full power restoration would be achieved within 14 days, with partial restoration expected in the next three days.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Speaking before the National Assembly, Adelabu emphasized that security agencies were working to clear the grid areas currently occupied by vandals, with repairs projected to be completed by November 12.

However, the timeline provided by Adelabu contrasts with an earlier statement from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which indicated that initial repairs to the damaged transmission line, the 330kV Shiroro-Mando Line 1, would be completed within five days, by November 3.

TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed that the company has implemented alternative measures to transmit 400 megawatts of electricity to select areas within 24 hours.

Abdulaziz elaborated on the severe security challenges encountered during the repair process, particularly as bandits disrupted efforts to restore the line.

He revealed that TCN has engaged local vigilantes and military escorts to protect engineers working on the transmission lines, who leave the site daily by 6 PM due to security risks.

TCN aims to restore both lines within the coming days, enabling it to transmit approximately 500 to 600 megawatts to the northern region by Sunday.

Efforts to prevent further vandalism have included partnerships with local landowners and security agencies.
