Over the years, successive Presidents have consulted Danjuma on issues of national importance, given his extensive military background and standing as an elder statesman.
Danjuma, 87, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential military and political figures. He served as Chief of Army Staff from 1976 to 1979 under the military government of General Olusegun Obasanjo and later as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2003 during Obasanjo’s civilian administration.
The Taraba State-born retired general played a significant role in Nigeria’s political history, including the July 1966 counter-coup that brought General Yakubu Gowon to power.

Beyond his military career, Danjuma is a businessman with interests in the oil and gas sector through South Atlantic Petroleum and is widely known for his philanthropic work via the TY Danjuma Foundation.
He has also been vocal on national security issues. In 2018, Danjuma stirred debate when he urged Nigerians to defend themselves against armed attackers, alleging that security forces were not doing enough to protect vulnerable communities.
