“Democracy does not mean everyone must support the President. A vibrant democracy requires opposition and alternative viewpoints,” Tinubu stated.
His comments follow concerns that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which holds significant control at both federal and state levels, is edging Nigeria toward single-party dominance.
President Tinubu warned against any drift toward authoritarianism, urging all arms of government and citizens to protect democratic values. “No nation can progress under an authoritarian system disguised as democracy,” he said.

He underscored the rule of law, press freedom, and political plurality as fundamental pillars of good governance and sustainable national development.
The address formed part of the national celebration of June 12 Democracy Day, commemorating the annulled 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola , a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
