The price of cement in Nigeria has continued to fluctuate despite the Federal Government’s directive for manufacturers to lower costs. As of February 28, 2025, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, mandated that cement producers reduce the price of a 50kg bag to ₦7,000 within one week.

He warned that failure to comply would lead to a report being made to President Bola Tinubu.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Umahi, during a meeting on February 26, 2025, stressed that the stabilization of the naira and a decline in petrol prices should support a reduction in cement prices. He argued that these economic improvements should make production and transportation cheaper, allowing manufacturers to sell at lower rates.

However, despite the government’s directive, cement prices remain high in various markets across the country.

A market survey revealed that Dangote Cement is being sold for between ₦9,500 and ₦10,000 per 50kg bag, depending on the retailer and location.

Similarly, BUA Cement is available for between ₦8,000 and ₦9,000 per bag, while Elephant Supaset Portland Limestone Cement is priced at ₦10,000 per bag. POP Cement is also being sold for ₦9,500 per bag.

This disparity between the government’s recommended pricing and actual market rates has been attributed to several factors. Industry experts cite supply chain issues, high production costs, and foreign exchange fluctuations as key challenges affecting pricing.

Demand for cement is also said to outweigh supply, putting additional pressure on market prices.

The national chairman of the Cement Producers’ Association of Nigeria (CEPAN), David Iweta, acknowledged the concerns and stated that with a better understanding between manufacturers and the federal government, cement prices could be reduced within 30 days. He emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to stabilize the market and ensure affordability.

Despite government interventions, cement prices continue to vary across different regions, depending on retailer pricing strategies and local economic conditions. Consumers are advised to check with local suppliers for the most up-to-date prices.
